as they say in the US: do the math....

13.1% over 3 years. the current average increase in salaries this year is between 4 and 4.5%. so make a guess how much the average salary will have increased over three years. now compare that number to 13.1%. maybe a few less exclamation marks might be appropriate?
 

Well the US dont know how to spell Mathematics. They forget the letter "s".

Anyway Prof Anonymous, until your degree is on hold because of no fault of your own, then i do not feel that you are in a position to complain about my opinions. My degree is more important than the lecturers pay.

Yes they deserve more but the newly formed UCU is getting too big for its boots.

The Government will not settle for 23%.

Most ordinary workers are lucky to receive 2% increase in their wages. The Lecturers are asking for too much.

I am a lecturer at a major university in the UK and the offer constitutes less than the cost of living when you average it out. I think that it is niave to think that lecturers should be grateful to accept something in line with the rest of the population. We are not the rest of the population nor are we 'ordinary workers'. We are very highly trained professionals who train all those professionals that you will rely on when you want a bridge built, a lawyer for your divorce, or a surgeon.
Also, year after year we have met performance benchmarks without any reward.
We do more than just teach. Universities are currently one of the major industries in the UK.

The new union is necessary because the good ol' boys in the faculty refused to accept that either union had enough members to have any impact. However, with a union this size, it is possible to negotiate a pay review board and students won't have to be affected by academic strikes.

by the way....we would have settled for 15% over three years if they had offered it. Nobody expects 23% - actually 20% - over three years.
